As an early Mother’s Day gift, my in-laws offered to pick up a pair of running shoes for me at Costco since I don’t have a membership. I am not a picky person, so I didn’t really care what they looked like. All I heard was “Adidas” and “$36”, and I was sold. They ended up selecting a few different brands for me to try on, including a pair of those butt-toning shoes. You know the ones? They look like platform sneakers and they feel REALLY WEIRD, like the ball of the foot is on a downward slope. Apparently they are supposed to singlehandedly transform you into Gisele Bündchen, so I figured I’d give them a whirl. “Happy Mother’s Day to me!” says my soon-to-be-toned butt.
A toned butt can be yours for the low, low price of $26.00 CAD
During the night after first wearing them, I felt quite sore in my calves and butt. At first I forgot about the shoes but then I quickly remembered — my butt was being toned! Of course I would be sore! Metamorphosing into Gisele has got to be at least a little bit painful, am I right?
It’s only been a couple of weeks so I haven’t noticed any visual difference in my legs and butt, but I certainly feel like walking is more of a challenge. Muscles I haven’t felt since the late 1990s feel much more sore and tight. Honestly, I don’t have high hopes that my Brazilian supermodel career is about to take off, but wearing these shoes has been an easy and interesting way to spice up my daily walks.
Today I had this very profound thought: The only predictable thing about a baby is his/her unpredictability. Pretty deep, eh? This comes after one very long, very difficult night. I should have known that his early bedtime yesterday was too good to be true! He was consistently up from the time I hit “Publish” to 10:30 pm. Then he was up consistently between midnight and 2:30 am. He slept solidly until 5:00 am when a new cycle of non-sleeping began. One of my new favourite hobbies is cataloguing Henry’s sleep times and then reflecting on the great amounts of self-pity and exhaustion I now feel.
Henry is now asleep, but I am not jinxing anything by even entertaining the thought he’ll be asleep for a few solid hours. Because of this realization, I am currently drinking a glass of wine.
Can you buy wine in bulk?
Today the weather finally warmed up enough to go for a walk! I’ve mentioned this before, but my day is greatly improved when I get a nice, one-hour long walk in there! Hubby comes with me and we take turns pushing the stroller. We stopped in for lunch at the Jacket Potato Cafe, a restaurant that specializes in jacket potatoes (aka “baked potatoes”). Hubby had one and he said it was just “ok”. I had the red lentil soup. The service was great, but I wasn’t too impressed.
We also noticed a new bakery that opened in our ‘hood! This is incredibly exciting since this is the first bakery that is within walking distance. Oh, fresh-baked carbs. I love you more than wine! We bought two Creamcheese brownies (vegan? vegan who?) and brought them home to enjoy with freshly brewed coffee. Perfection!
Being able to get out and about gets me VERY excited for spring and summer. Henry loves to go for walks and I am fortunate enough to live in an area with many interesting places to go. I wonder what other (carb-focused) adventures we will get up to this year?
Will walk for carbs (especially if they look like these).
November and February are traditionally my most-despised months, but for obvious reasons, I do not feel my usual hate. For one, it is the month of my son’s birth! *insert OMG face here* For two, I do not have to go to work (I promise I will stop mentioning this in every entry; this will likely happen sometime in mid-March). For three, today is beautiful!
I’ve found that a great way to start my day is by having a bowl of yogurt and granola and then immediately going for a 1/2 hour walk. I wonder how this routine will change once baby arrives? I was thinking I could still probably get out for a quick 20 minute jaunt once he is fed and sleeping again, since Husband is often home in the mornings (today he started work at noon). I would bring baby along with, but don’t feel comfortable doing that in the cold months!
I just really want to make sure I get at least a bit of fresh air and exercise this winter. I can easily see myself hibernating away, wrapped in blankets and eating an abundance of carbohydrates. That doesn’t sound so bad…until even my beloved yoga pants won’t fit! <– Possibly speaking from experience. Possibly.

Along with daily walks, another of my “healthy hopes” is to have either a salad or Green Monster each day. I’ve mostly been having GMs because I’ve been having leftovers for lunch. Today’s lunch consisted of:
- Leftover snobby joe mix on three small slices of rye bread
- Leftover steamed veggies
- Black grapes
- Slice of Jalapeno Havarti cheese
The chocolate chip cookies are calling my name, but I am trying to hold out until my snack of a GM later this afternoon. Will power, where art thou?!!?
My plans for the rest of the day involve:
- Watching Oprah. Portia De Rossi, aka Ellen’s wife, is going to be talking about her experience with anorexia.
- Making Oh She Glow’s chili along with a loaf of quick bread (new recipe! If good, will be sure to share)
- Watching It’s Complicated (got it in the mail this morning via Zip)
- Avoiding Halloween candy like it’s The Plague (except it’s not The Plague, is it? It is actually the complete opposite of The Plague in every single way.)
- Waiting to give birth <– Requisite to-do list item
A Bootsy Paw For Your Enjoyment
Before the sun goes down and the ghosts, goblins, and “snookies” start knocking at my door looking for candy (or gorilla juice heads!), I thought I’d write a short post now.
This morning I went for a 1/2 hour walk before the rest of the world woke up. This is my favourite time to walk because the streets are so quiet, especially on a Sunday morning. Now that I am merely 6 days away from my due date, I always make sure to bring my cell with me, just in case a baby decides he wants to use that moment to make his appearance. Thankfully, he stayed put, and I was able to stroll the complete 1/2 hour without any pain or discomfort. This is an achievement because during the past couple of walks, I’ve had some Braxton Hicks contractions which makes walking just a tad more difficult. Today was perfect. I even spotted this beautiful sunflower, one of the last remnants of summer before Mr. Frosty or Father Christmas or whoever it is who is in charge of freezing cold weather decides to show up.
Indeed, this afternoon brought with it Toronto’s first snowfall of the season. We just had a few flurries, but it was enough to make me and the people around me say a few profanities. Just a few, though.
My in-laws came over with a new kitchen table that was originally my husband’s grandparents’ and then my brother-in-law’s. His family is moving and bought a new kitchen table, so we inherited the beautiful oak dining set. It is much nicer that our $139 set from IKEA but it took us the majority of the afternoon to 1) figure out how to get it into our tiny house and 2) put the top on the base. Ok, let me rephrase that. It took my in-laws and husband the majority of the afternoon to put it together while I sat on the couch and rubbed my giant belly.
But I made dinner! Brownie points? No?
Now I am just anxiously awaiting the first trick-or-treaters of the night. My bowl of candy is ready and waiting!
A noted lack of Peanut Butter Cups. Hmmmm, how did that happen?
This Sunday night feels different than what I’m used to. Of course, this is partly because of Halloween, but it is mainly because tomorrow is my first Monday off work! I still wake up each morning feeling like it’s Christmas, although even with more than a year off, I am already wondering/stressing about my work-life balance once I must return to work (anyone offering free daycare in the Greater Toronto area?). Talk about putting the cart before the horse! Sometimes I need to remind myself to just chill out and enjoy the ride. Today is my 29th birthday. I joke that it is the first of MANY 29th birthdays 🙂
So far, it’s been a pretty great day. It is great by default since I don’t have to go to work! It began with a steaming cup of coffee and a pumpkin pecan scone I picked up at Whole Foods yesterday. Great foresight on my part to have a pumpkin baked good for my birthday breakfast. It was delicious!
Oh, Coffee. How I love thee.
I am out of the food blogging practice and started eating this before taking a picture!
After breakfast, I decided to go for a walk. Since my ability to walk very far has been impeded by the little person attached to my front, I decided to take it slow and steady and just enjoy the fall foliage. I really should have gone for a walk yesterday when the weather was sunny and warm. Today was overcast and very windy, but I managed.

I walked down to Lake Ontario and enjoyed the view.
The rest of my “special” day involves a midwife appointment (they are weekly now!), homemade pizza (frugal!), and pumpkin carving. Just a sweet little domestic day to commence my sweet little domestic year!
